My child is ready for toilet training, what do I do now?

Toilet timing is a way to toilet train children.  It’s a technique we use to encourage your child to go to the toilet periodically throughout the day.

Firstly, you need to work out what times of the day your child toilets. It may help to keep a diary of when your child’s nappy is wet or dirty.

Once you know when your child wees/ poos, take your child to the toilet around those times. This may be 1-2 hourly to start off with. Make sure the toilet is a fun place to go to. Play or sing in there so your child is happy to be there. Have rewards/ motivators ready for every time they successfully use the toilet.

Help your child learn the toilet routine of:

  1. Undressing
  2. Sitting on the toilet
  3. Wiping, redressing
  4. Flushing the toilet
  5. Washing hands

Below are some resources with further information about toilet timing. Every child is different so if you have any questions, please contact our Occupational Therapist, Dani Sheldon.
